If you are married or have been married (divorced or a widow) then you are a Matron of Honor.

If you are single (never married) you are a Maid of Honor.

Contrary to popular belief, the difference in terms has absolutely nothing to do with somone's age.

A Bride can have a Matron of Honor and a Maid of Honor OR just a Maid of Honor OR or just a Matron of Honor.

Whether you are a Maid or Matron of Honor your responsibilities, duties and support for the Bride are the same.

Can the Matron and Maid of Honor wear the same gown? It's the Bride's choice, the gowns can be the same or different.

yes a sister can be part of the wedding party. The difference between a maid of honor and and matron of honor is not her relationship to the bride but her own married status. A maid of honor is single and a matron of honor is a married woman.

A married woman is a Matron of Honor; a single woman is a Maid of Honor; there is only one position.

A maid of honor means a women who is UNMARRIED. A Matron of honor means a woman who is MARRIED. If the sister is unmarried then she is only a maid of honor. If she will be married before that friend's wedding then yes she is a matron of honor.

If your friend is married, she is a Matron of Honor. If shes single, she is a Maid of Honor.
And the bridesmaids are all "bridesmaid" whether they are married or single.
