I searched through "The Complete Dog Book" on this same question about 15 years ago. It's a fairly thick book. I dog eared (pun always intended) all of the pages showing dogs I found suitable. My wife looked through, and unfolded the "dog ears" on the pages of dogs she didn't like. We wound up with mostly terriers and a couple of boxers. We eliminated the boxers, because we hear they snore (something the book fails to mention).
Our short list wound up:
Cairn Terrier (a Toto)
West Highland Terrier (aka Westie)
We then discovered something very interesting. The Westies have hair, not fur. Consequently they don't shed. The only other dogs I know like that are poodles. I did not consider poodles, because I think they are too yappy.
We set out to buy a Westie, but could not find one. We wound up buying a Cairn.
A few years later we bought a Westie.
Both are great.
They all get under foot, no matter what size!

a book on small breeds would help you in your decision. how ever when you consider what type of dog to get, do yourself and the dog a favor and consider the dog. consider where you live, how often your home, how many people visit your home on a regular bases. Dogs have different characters that follow the breed. a fox terrier is active and will be OK alone as long as he has A LOT of toys around to play with, other wise he will get bored and turn your couch pillows into toys. a Pomeranian is a hyper critter, but is for the most part calm when alone, still requires toys but a not as many, but they are a people persons more so that the fox and so they do best with someone who is home more than gone. take into account your character as well .... for instance a woman I know had a small breed, after awhile she got tired of the simple pleasures of having her pet and started just letting it out to go to the bathroom instead of taking it for a walk ..... the dog disappeared. Good luck in your search

You could get a Jack Russel, Bichon Frise, Coton De Tulear, American Eskimo, Australian Terrier, Basset Hound, Beagle, Border Terrier, Bulldog, or Cairn Terrier. You can find info on the dog breeds at

Please figure out how much time you have for a pet. Do you want a puppy? If you want to train him/her properly, you need to have extra time, to include frequent potty breaks (every 2-3 hours in the beginning). You need to figure out what kind of lifestyle you have. For example, if you can't run for 5 miles a day and you live in a small apartment, a border collie is NOT for you. Please do your research carefully prior to selecting your dog because there are a lot of abandoned pets out there. On this topic, I would recommend visiting the local shelter because there are a lot of quality pets in need of good homes.

We have a border terrier. He is really sweet and very cudderly. Every night Mum and Dad sit down for a meal and as soon as our dog see's they are finished he jumps on her lap. He also won't stand for alot of noscese. And will tell you if you accidently tread on him.

well if you want a small dog then i would go for a terrier cross the reason i would go for a cros breed is because they are easier to train and more loyal. Maybe a jack russell they are cute aswell, try this website

You should consider getting a Labrador. They are great dogs and are really obedient. You can learn them to do almost anything quite quickly.

we have 3 shih tzu's. they are smart, cute, love to be cuddled and are easy to train. they do not shed, dont bark and cause very little trouble. their only vice is they like to be paid attention to, so if you are gone alot, and have to cage them, it isnt a good idea. they like people, and are great with kids. go to this website, www.sunvalleykennel.com and you will find very cute pups, and the breeder is the best around. any questions please feel free to email me.
