Look, I'm notoriously paranoid about this, but anyone with a reasonable amount of experience will tell you before trying to do a dual-boot do 3 things: 1. Back up your files. This is very very important: back them up. Accidents happen all the time. 2. Run Disk Defragmenter. Windows writes files wherever on the disk it sees enough space for this file. That means unless you make the system more compact, which Disk Defragmenter does, then you could be overwriting important files even though your system reports you have room to install it.

For the next step you need to repartition your hard drive. I attempted this some six years ago but never succeeded. That is why I am listing two sites which explain how. Both say use the System Rescue CD which was not available in the Antediluvian days when I was doing this stuff: I've used it for other purposes and I provided a link to it. I haven't been on Windoze in years, but I'm told that Nero will burn isos to disk if you don't know how.

Frankly, I just tell people if you want to make sure you can boot from Windows and Linux ask around at computer repair shops for someone you can pay to repartition your hard drive. Then use the Install disk, and just make sure in cfdisk or fdisk or whatever Ubuntu is using you leave that Windows partition alone.
