Yes it will be fine depending on the size of the other luggage. You might even get away with the laptop bag separate if the other luggage is not that big. If it's only rug sack - you will be fine, but a big backpack wont be allowed.
You can only take 2 bags on depending on their size and weight.

The 1 carry on + 1 personal item is a government regulation but it is left up to the individual airline to enforce. If you put the laptop in your backpack you would be in compliance and thus be sure to not have any problems. You would probably be ok with the 3 items seperate as long as the gate agent isnt having a bad day. :)

If you are going on a plane which only allows 2 carry-on items, then a Laptop, plus a backpack, plus another carry-on luggage bag WOULD violate this limit. However, putting your laptop in your backpack brings it down to TWO carry-on items.
However, be advised, you will be required to submit your laptop for inspection at the airport, which means if you have 'extra-legal' software, or otherwise illegal material on it, it may be confiscated((depending on where you live)), and you may face criminal charges.
In addition, you won't be permitted to use the Laptop's "wireless network" capacity, because it may interfere with the plane itself.((Some Air companies actually require that all Laptops must remain OFF during the flight.))

Just because you put a laptop in a suitcase or backpack doesn't necessarily qualify it as your 2nd personal carry-on item such as a purse, briefcase or laptop. It will depend on the size, American Airlines for example, states that your carry-on bag can be no larger than 45 linear inches (length+height+width) and that your 2nd bag or personal item can be no more than 36 linear inches and weight is also a consideration. Some airlines are fairly lenient with their carry-on allowances, but many strictly enforce their limits. I think if you stay within the allowances you'll be fine, if you don't you may have to check one of your bags in or possibly be stopped at the gate and required to check one of your bags.

Most airlines have an explanation on their website of their onboard luggage rules. Yes, most will allow one bag PLUS a laptop, purse or briefcase. So if you put your laptop in your backpack they should allow you to bring it onboard along with your other bag (in other words, total of 2 bags).
The one exception that I know of is Heathrow Airport in London. They only allow one bag in total. But if I am overpacked and going through Heathrow I have sometimes been able to satisfy the one bag limit as follows: my laptop is in my backpack but I can take it out and carry it free because they want me to do that anyway at the security line. I take a few bulky items out of my purse and put them in my pockets. Then I squish the rest of my pursue into my backpack where I just removed the laptop.

If you pack your laptop in your backpack you are allowed to bring on other personal (carry on type) luggage on the aircraft with you.

At the moment it is one item only from the uk....
I put my laptop in a duffel bag with all my other bits and it was fine. Just remember to remove it at xray and put all the leads etc in your 'hold' luggage.

There's nothing stupid about your question. Its a general thing that most people practice and you'll just have to remember that you need to show the security personnels at checkpoints to be sure. Besides, it is often riskier to check in your laptop as you might risk losing it to baggage handlers or even security personnels themselves!

Yours is not a stupid question but a foolish question. You can spend the 2 or 3 hours of flight reading some in-flight magazines or humming some devotional or old classical songs of your choice-especially in this age of Computer and Laptop MANIA.
