Check it with your local council offices first - if you do it and they don't like it or it's not safe you'll be wasting a lot of cash ! ! !

I'm assuming you mean the actual up and over type door ...only your local council can answer that ...its OK in my town but not in the next borough ..but there's more to it than that ..why would you want to do this unless you are planning to convert the garage in to a room ..a habitable room ...then you will need to comply with building regs ..and there are lots of regs for this conversion ..whatever you do ..do it right ..some day you will want to sell it ..and if you have not ...done it right ..then you will not be able to sell it!......if you mean the door that allows you into the garage from the house ..then no ..that door is a fire door

Every area is different, so what would be permitted development in one area would require planning permission in another, it also depends if you live in a conservation area or if you live in a listed building, or if indeeed the permitted development rights have been removed from your housing estate entirely. Really you would be better to contact your local Planning Authority, most are willing to answer this sort of enquiry over the phone so should only be a quick call. You will also need to check with your local Building Standards section (usually within the Planning department, just a different section) as they also have regulations that have to be followed.

Depends on where you live. If you have a neighbor who has it in for you it would be best to check with CityHall.

We have done so many remodeling projects in the house without permits .But when our garage was built we definitely got one.

We built an outdoor storage shed on 10 acres in a very rural area and had a building inspector out there because of a neighbor who wants us to sell land to him.

if you are in the uk you will need to speak to local authority building regs. there are specific requirements for separating garages and habitable buildings, particularly fire spread from the garage to the house. doing it improperly could be very nasty and should be picked up by a surveyor if you want to sell, change it back or devalue

You don't need planning permission but you need to apply for building regs. Contact your local council for necessary forms etc..

Just an idea.

In my area you don't need planning permission for jobs under $10,000 generally.

Ask your council/city hall if they have such a rule. Some have this type info on their website. Mine does.

Probably not, as you are not greatly changing the look of the building, but its always best to check if you are unsure. Have a look at your councils website for more info.
