I had it done without sedation because I wanted to watch the procedure on the monitor. Usually they will first sedate you and then spray the back of your throat with a anesthetic. Then you feel zero. My Mother had it done, I arrived after they brought her out, as promised, said hi and a chat then she went off to sleep and I was told to return in one hour, so I did. Mother was awake and screaming at me because I was not their when she came out? I was but I guess she did not remember?
I found the entire procedure interesting. I was first shown the magnification of the camera, using a single hair on my arm that on the monitor looked like a tree trunk, powerful. I was then given the mouth piece, placed that in and they fed the camera tube in, asked me to swallow and hey presto, down it went. I 'trusted' the Surgeon, have known him a long time, he said 'No way will you choke, be unable to breath, let alone die'. Once he finished his tour the Nurse turned me over so I could see the monitor and we came back, stopped for two biopsies and then out. The only discomfort was the extra large 'belch' due to the fact they use gas to blow open the area so the camera does not as such tough the sides of anything. I then walked back to my ward and ate my dinner.
Without sedation I felt zero, just the belching at the end.
Good Luck.

Upper Endoscopy Without Sedation

A little info I think should be considered about this drug Versed ( Midazolam ) that is used for Sedation for many medical procedures..Sedation and General Anesthesia are not the same and quite a few people being given Sedation
think they are being given General Anesthesia!

There is simply no good or valid reason to ever purposely induce amnesia during a medical procedure. It is only a recent development in medical thinking that amnesia is somehow a "benefit" to the patient. On occasion some
some patients will remember a bad experience. Forgetting does not mean it did not happen!!
I feel that if people were aware of the effects of this drug they would Opt For Another Drug!
Erasing someones memory of what was done to them is wrong!!
In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" Twilight Sedation, during a procedure are Awake For The Entire Procedure but remember nothing, often Believing They Were "Out" the whole time.

Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like setting broken bones, colonoscopies, endoscopies, dental procedures like extractions, conscious sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!

Here is a note from a Dentist Who uses Versed
I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints they have no memory of the procedure.....

I feel that giving a drug for amnesia is cruel I would not want it done to me!

A strange development in medical thinking that it's okay for a patient to have
pain as long as they don't remember it and think they slept thru the procedure..

Before the endoscopy you will be asked to fast for around 8-12hours beforehand. This ensures that your stomach is empty and you cannot vomit. Make sure to tell the doctor that you are feeling nervous about the procedure and he should assure you everything will be fine. They spray an anaesthetic in your throat and you don't feel anything. If he also sedates you, you will probably remember nothing of the procedure (it only takes about 10 minutes). Good luck and hope the end result is good news.

You want that sedation, I had that done and they started before the sedation took affect and it was like they ere trying to stick a metal or hard plastic fist down my throat. When they noticed I was still conscious, they must have given me an extra dose.
I get my care from the VA and that's the only complaint I have about them ever.
