What are some good books about Islamic beliefs, customs, and social conducts? For example, a book for one who needs to know the "basics."

Don't get just one, get a bunch.
I, personally, look for books that go over the archeology and history of a belief system with little bias, but, since that's hard to find, I'd suggest you get a number of books: at least two written by two different Muslims with "pro" points of view and a couple written in the anti-. Then do a lot of research.
Here's another tip: don't look for info on Yahoo! Answers.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but Karen Armstrong has written some books about Islam: 'Islam: A short history', 'Muhammed, A Biography of the Prophet', and 'Muhammed, A Prophet of our Time'.

Riyadus Shalihin. However I have tried to seek it in the net its english version, I do not find one. This books is very basic and explore the syari a on every day matter: deal with neighbour, dealing with parents, children, manner when eats, etc. If you really like, i will translate it to you pages to pages, one by one.
