It's saying, in essence: Assert yourself.
If unclean hands can be put into your "joy"; if a$$holes can tell you what to do; if even lower life form animals can be the masters of you; then what was life living for? All you can do is bow and obey.

It sounds like a sad quote. If anyone could take your joy, even the unworthy, what was the point in ever having it? Why did my wisdom even exist if anyone, even idiots, could tell me what's right and wrong? How could I be free if anyone could control me?
In other words, don't be a "pushover." Think about yourself before others. That does not mean to be selfish, however. You must think about your own needs and priorities before saying "yes" or "no" to someone. Take care of yourself, because no one else will.

it probaly means why bother saying that you have it when you dont really have it at all. whats the use in saying that you are free when even the worst are in control of you. you dont have freedom. what is wisdom worth when stupid people tell you you are wrong; tell you stupid things. why bother living when you have to do as you are told.

To me it says that all of the virtues are useless and unsatisfactory if they are not attained in willingness. It sounds depressing, actually.
