...and one of their favorites seems to be that "science once thought that the earth was flat; they were wrong, etc. etc."

But, wait; was it science that said that the earth was flat?...

"Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever." Psalms 104:5

Well, maybe God didn't mean that the earth was flat, just that it sits in one place and doesn't move, and that the sun revolves around it. After all,

"The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved." Psalms 93:1

"The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose." Ecclesiastes 1:5

So how could scientists have gone so far astray? How is it not plain to them that the earth sits motionless and the sun revolves around the earth? It's all right there in the bible, after all...

C. L. Richardson: Who said the bible quotes I gave? You're absolutely right; I don't know. Does it matter? They're in the bible; surely you can't mean that some stuff written in the bible is true and some isn't? That's downright heretical.

offthewall: As far as I can see, it's just a bunch of praising in Psalms 93...104 seems to talk about a bunch of cool stuff he did...I'm clearly missing something. Maybe I'm just dumb; would you care to explain what he actually meant?

Mr. Could: You might have noticed that the scientific establishment does not hold fairy tales related in mythology texts such as the bible as "proof" of anything. Nor do I.

Big Brother D: Are you trying to make light of this idea? If so, do you even have a clue of what they're talking about? If not, you might try watching a few shows on the science channel about it before you poke fun.

"Hey, some scientists were wrong at some points in time about some things. I'm just going to believe what I want to believe and if it goes against what has been shown to be scientifically correct, then I'll just point out my first statement. In the case where my belief is matched by the evidence, the science will obviously be correct."

Yeah, that argument seems logical.

I have to wonder, though, when a Creationist visits a doctor and the doctor makes his/her diagnosis, does the Creationist respond with, "yeah, well doctors were wrong before, so whatever I think may be wrong is probably right"? Then do they keep going to different doctors until one finally says that their self-diagnosis may be right, and they flaunt it in the face of the other doctors?

Um, Big Brother (below)....did you read the statements about the EARTH in the question? Your article is in reference to the theory of the shape of the universe. So you are excused from class.

True, creationist seem to ignore the fact that science detects, admits its errors and moves on to trying to be accurate. They on the other hand, seem content to argue based on a failed 6th grade understanding of the general science, that professionals would miss "blatant" flaws. This is like most of us trying to tell a neurosurgeon that they have no clue about their job.

Edit:
No other civilization on earth noticed the sun stopping or moving backwards, and there is no indication in any Egyptian record of any of the Exodus story from the alleged Joseph to the time that Moses lead the Jews out.

Edit 2:
Creationist "science" tends to be very nonscientific, in that it jumps to conclusions without examining the facts or trying to preserve as much data about the find as it can, for example look at the "London, Texas hammer". The "find" was not preserved or documented in its original site, and even after serious examination was shown to be a recent hammer, is attempted to show that it was produced in ancient times.

Scientists are humans, which means that sometimes they're idiots. Unlike their theist counterparts, however, they are encouraged to relook at their theories and conclusions and assumptions when new evidence or paradigms are revealed. Scientists created and then disproved the idea of ether, cold fusion, and a number of scientific hoaxes. Creationists are still fighting for a 3,000+ year old creation myth that has zero evidence for it and plenty of evidence against!

Science, while as falliable as any human-inspired effort, can and will move forward. Religion will always hold us back.

They ignore that Thales figured it was curved by 546 BCE, Pythagoras figured it was a sphere, and Eratosthenes calculated the diameter by 194 BCE. Hardly modern science.

Science learns; they choose ignorance.

Yeah well Joshua stopped the sun, I'd like to see any scientist accomplish that.

Plus Moses turned his rod into a snake and it ate Pharoah's.
Such feats in the Bible pretty much prove that church science is superior to -- hold on, what was your question again?

People ask "Why did people think the Sun revolved around the Earth" and the answer usually is "... because it looks like it does"

My question is... "How would it look if the Earth revolved around the Sun?"
