If you were the first person to sail a boat up to the shores of Easter Island and saw a row of giant stone heads standing on the hillside, which of the following would you conclude and why?

A) Human beings had obviously visited the island and intentionally put them like this.

B) Other intelligent life forms, Aliens, Gargoyles, Monsters, whatever,, put them like this.

C) The wind, the sea and erosion over a long period of time has carved them out of rocks already standing here.

D) You are simply too baffled to speculate.

I just want to see how many of us here are still grounded in reality; sometimes I wonder.

A, of course. Great question. :)

Since I have seen very similar carvings and know humans carved those, I would say it was likely humans made them. Had I never seen humans, I would then look for direct evidence of what could do such a thing before assuming it was or wasn't natural.

I certainly wouldn't say that since humans had carved similar things before, and no humans were around, that a god had done it.

Obviously A, though I speculate you are trying to prove some kind of a weak point to atheists with C, just a guess.

A). Man has walked on this Planet for a VERY long time- so he's BEEN pretty much everywhere on it, at one time or other. Easter Island is one of those "places" from one of those times... :)

I would definitely have to assume it was aliens because my preconceptions about the primitive nature of any humans who may have lived there would prevent me from thinking they could create and erect such things.

I would also see no trees, leading me to assume alien intervention as the next most plausible cause.

It's all about Ockham's razor. :p

I'm an atheist. My answer would be a).

(note that humans are known to make human looking figures, but no intelligent being is known to make universes or life)

Catholic, and I would say God created everything humans, rocks, the seascapes, and he was responsible for it all.

I would give thanks to God for landing safely on the Island and for permitting me to see treasures.
