The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk took Soviet Russia out of the war. In reaction to that, the other allied forces dispatched troops to Archangel and Murmansk to guard allied munitions which were still stored there from the days of the Imperial Russian government. Of course the allies didn't get permission from Lenin's government. So, in February of 1918 a joint British and U.S. force invaded Soviet Russia. The force was under command of a British Brigadier. The U.S. troops were a National Guard regiment from Michigan. Over the next year and a half they fought the Red Army's 25th Division up and down both banks of the Dvina River south of Murmansk. Many of the dead from that regiment are still buried in the Russian tundra. The rest were recovered over the next few years and lie in the veterans' section of the White Cross cemetery in Detroit. As a result of this the Congress passed a law which forbade U.S. troops ever serving under operational control of a foreign commander.
The impact of all of this was the beginning of the Cold War between the Soviets and the U.S.
