2000 Dodge Caravan 3.0L 2W
I had asked about this earlier. However, I have a new development since then, so I'm starting a new post because all I can do it edit the other, and not sure if the question would be noticed, by the already very helpful people.Ok, so here's the issue:
The heater does start to blow warmish air. However, if the engine is running you cannot use the defroster. As soon as you turn the knob to either the defost/mix or full defrost, for whatever reason it changes to air conditioning and starts to blow out freezing cold air. After investigating this, while on the phone with my dad who is a car guy, we assume it's a "fan"/valve. So what would be the name of the part I need to get replaced, where is it located? I've tried looking on Autozone.com and Oreilly's for a heater valve, and cannot find anything like that. Also, I should mention that when you switch the fan to the 4th notch only(right before full blast) it shuts everything off. Wiring bad?All other levelsfine

When I asked where is it located, I meant the valve. Is it in the dashboard? Or under the hood?

minivans have not hold heater control valves on the hoses since 1995. all incoming air flows over the a/c evaporator in the heater box. the air is then directed through or around the heater core, depending on where your heat setting is. when you turn on the defrost, the a/c compressor automatically comes on to dry the air to help defrost quicker. what is happening in your van is the air is being cooled over the evaporator but not heated over the heater core. the first thing to do is to feel the heater hoses and see if they are hot. if they are not hot, you are most likely low on coolant. if they are hot, you have a restricted heater core or a blend door problem inside the heater box, the the control head is bad. try flushing the heater core both directions with a garden hose and see if you get heat. otherwise, you will need electrical diagnosis of the blend door actuator and control head.

Sounds like a bad "blend door" actuator or heater control maybe....a/c is suppose to kick on in defrost mode to dry the air but it still should come out hot if the blend door is working. It allows hot air from the heater core through the ducts behind the dash. Blend doors are usually vacuum or electrically operated...could be from a vacuum leak too. Check a service manual at Eautorepair.net for info on how to diagnose and repair/replace....small fee.
Fan speed inop on 4th level is usually a bad blower resistor or possibly the switch....have to inspect each one and test for power going thru.

Your heater core may be plugged up...If you have had major work on the car sometime stuff gets in the core....Radiator work, head gaskets....You may need to flush the heating system...I had the same problem with my tacoma..

truthfully, if it is the heating factor, cost the section and a sparkling dryer. on line i offered an incredible GE dryer that became dropped at my living house for $25 better than the fee of the section. pronounced as a refurbishing equipment broker and have been given $20 for the previous one.
