Age is alright for some forms of respect, for common courtesy at least, but it doesn't automatically have "you will joyfully respect me" written in a guarantee, does it?

Respect is eventually earned by most people but not all and few people are respected by most people.

You seem to have it together without having to give out automatic age-determined respect... Like it is for everything
else you encounter in life, you must weigh the facts and merits before you can decide wisely.

Here's a good thing to keep in mind:

Because there are so many with little desire to let their good show; instead letting the worst out. Those that are doing that are very immature inside. I'd be willing to bet you're a better person for having witnessed the immaturity and puerile adults at their utmost most embarrassing worst here, you can certainly learn what not to do from adults as much as you can learn what is good to do. Sorry, hon, but some adults are really poor adults - not even as good as Peter Pans.

Well, when I see any group of people calling each other names, insulting one another's beliefs, and generally acting like the north end of a southbound horse, I'm not particularly inclined to respect them, either. In this Forum, that behavior isn't limited to one particular age category, however.

I don't pass out respect like Halloween candy. If someone wants my respect, they have to show me that they've got some common sense and courtesy for others. Given those qualifiers, age is immaterial.

Because the majority of your "elders" are acting like 6 year old girls trying to one up one another and acting immature which not only give you no incentive to respect them but also probably makes you lose respect for them.... I know I have...

I'm glad I'm an elder. With the way most of us adults are in this day and age, I'd never be able to respect them if I were your age.

Good luck, and sorry about the mess we've left you guys.

First, you don't know who your elders are. There are people here who claim to be 50 but they are really 18. And the reverse is also true.
Second, respect can easily be lost or never deserved.

unless you state your age how would you even know anyones age and are ideas really subjective to age or is the logic of reason something more substantial than that of personal feelings alone.

Not all elders deserve your respect. Respect is earned, it is not given freely.

You need incentive?

Respect those deserving of respect. Adulthood does not automatically make people intelligent. I've read your posts, you can think for yourself and make quality judgments as to who should be listened to and who should be dismissed. :P

Probably for the same reason I lose respect for today's youth.
