This kid on my college soccer team use to be a very angry kid and got yellow/red cards all the time. Well, over the summer he got saved (found Jesus). Now whenever some player gets pissed at him he responds with "love". Players get pissed at him and he will just go up and hug them sometimes or some other act of kindness. The players have a look of shock and confusion upon their face. Players don't know how to handle it. It's something I really don't understand when I think about it. These players are big strong guys, but a simple act of love renders them helpless. This is interesting and I just wanted to know what you all thought of this...

First of all, kindness and love shocks people all the time, not just big strong athletes. If you find peace and love in your heart then you can extend it to others and stop being so angry and mean. Life is too short and meaningful to be mean and angry for any reason at all. I am not a Christian and I don't even believe in the bible but I do believe in God and goodness. Goodness always wins over evil. I wish everyone would be nice and kind to one another and the world would be a much better place. ;)

Well - It sounds as if this particular boy is feeling really good about "finding Jesus". However, he is carrying it too far.
There is a place for everything, and in a football team, hugging and "some other act of kindness" is not for the football team. Unfortunately, (and I am trying to say this with out judgment) when you are in a state of euphoria because you have found something that makes you feel good, you don't think properly and just spread it around.

I am sure that if you put it in a kind way, and say you are glad for him that he has found a religion that makes him feel good - BUT there is a time and place for everything. Being kind, and positive is a good thing, even on the football field, but come on, even you must agree, that hugging with love, on the football field, towards football players is a little out of line.

"A simple act of love" is wonderful, but he is unfortunately, expressing himself with those that do not understand and not everyone is feeling like he is at that moment.

Common sense comes in here, and that is what he should be using. Living a kind, loving, giving life is a great thing and I am sure that just by example those other team players will notice a difference in him, without the hugs. Some people hug and do not feel loving at all, they just do it for effect, so I would not call hugging a "simple act of love" for everyone.

It's good that the guy found Jesus and is changing the way he lives his life, but I think that there are STILL boundaries and I think that by hugging the other team players is crossing the boundaries that every individuals has. ESPECIALLY because it doesn't sound like the other team players want to be hugged and feel uncomfortable. If I were one of the team players and this guy came up to me and hug me, I would tell him to back off and explain to him how UNCOMFORTABLE I feel with him crossing my personal boundaries.

People are uncomfortable around over expressive people honey. Whether they are big, strong soccer players, or meek minded bench-warmers, nobody likes to see someone get all gushy when there is sweat and testosterone involved. . . .it's just not right.

I understand the kid found Jesus. I'm sure he couldn't be happier, but someone needs to tell him that his behavior is a little over the top and he needs to tune it down a notch during the games.

Better than hate but still violates others personal space. A girl was recently in the news because she hugged a friend (public displays of affection are banned at her school). Guys usually feel ackward when other guys touch them. They can simply say "dude a handshake will do" if they really don't want to be hugged. Anger is expected, especially when sports are in the mix. Glad he is trying to make positive steps to change his life.

Kindness is something that everyone wants extended to them. Especially when it's least expected. And when it really happens, I guess in today's world, some people find that astonishing and don't really quite know how to react. I mean it's difficult to be mean to someone who is being nice to you. If we all could practice that a little more, instead of allowing our tempers to get the best of us, it sure would make for a lot less road rage and violence.

people will act surprised, scared, disturbed with something they dont understand, its the human reaction. This kid has found his way and is not ashamed of his faith. These other players might accept what your college team player is doing if they knew why he was doing this. Other than that, the world judges.

It is the Holy Spirit working in him that makes him behave in this way!
I'm not surprised that they are shocked by this complete change of heart! It is hard for people to grasp if they haven't experienced it themselves!
I've heard of the most violent, hardened criminals giving their lives to the Lord and becoming the most gentle, loving people you could ever wish to meet! If they've had a genuine change of heart, the difference is incredible!
I met an ex-drug addict once. She'd been addicted to heroin and was selling herself o pay for her habit. The day she gave her life to the Lord, she stopped craving any drugs and never ever took any illegal substances again, never sold herself again and got clean!
She then went to college and now has a respectable job, is married with children and continues to go to church and helps other people who are addicted to drugs to get themselves off drugs and into a much better life than they could ever have imagined for themselves!
The best way to achieve anything is with faith and love!
I hope this helps!

I think that is great to hear!! People do change. Remember, he is not a kid anymore, he is a young man now with a loving heart. Hopefully, the other players will learn by his example. "Treat others like you want to be treated", the saying goes.

It does sound like an improvement!
Playing hard is fine, but no need to hold grudges.
Do you think some people get into soccer because they have a bad temper and want a more or less acceptable outlet for it?
