My father continued to blast me with the scriptures and constant badgering about being saved and such right up until I told him that he was just as annoying as any Jehovah's Witness I've ever met. That was 9 years ago. Since then he has not done that and we've gotten along fine.

My mother likes to preach to me at times, but I tell her to save her breath for someone else, and she usually just says "I'm going to pray for you" and I tell her to make sure she does. Mom goes on a religious tangent, it's time for timbers to get in his car and go back home.

Atheists and religious people can get along. Sometimes though when an atheist gets so fed up and annoyed with religious people talking about religious stuff all the time it can be hard to maintain a polite and ongoing relationship. Most atheists will befriend other atheists. As far as family goes, atheists just try not to talk about religion with them and suffer through it as much as they can.

Atheists don't believe in God because they have considered the possibility of there being a God, and came to the rational and logical conclusion that it is all superstitious nonsense.

For the most part, but I have had fundamentalist types tell me I'll spend eternity in Hell. Not very friendly of them, so I don't do much to maintain those relationships. A couple of them are relatives, so I just leave the room when they start talking religion.
I don't believe in god because the stories are full of holes that have no proof and make absolutely no sense. Believers conveniently cite the need for faith to get past the parts that are utterly unbelievable. Plus, I don't believe a being capable of being a god would be so hateful. Religion is full of war and death and negativity. True leaders realize that humankind needs to be better than that.

why would i believe in god? theres no evidence to support a god's existence. I'm not an irrational person and believing something that has zero evidence backing it is irrational. But i also choose not to believe that god is not there, b/c there is no evidence to disprove god either. Therefore, i choose not to believe one way or another - i choose to say "i dont know" (which makes me an agnostic)

Unlike you, I'm man enough to admit when I don't know, or really, when i cannot know. I do not instead fabricate something in my mind so that i'll feel good.

And yes, I maintain relationships with religious people. I kinda get a headache when they say certain things because most of it is so irrational and illogical. But, I've learned that once someone truly believes something, nobody can convince them otherwise- even if they are being presented with FACTS that go against their beliefs. I think this is why some people still say evolution is fiction.

Plus, the question should actually be....what causes you to believe?

I am agnostic, irreverent. I do not attend church nor do I flaunt my agnosticism since I am not agnostic in order either to offend or convert anyone. I have no beliefs, either, as an agnostic, and, as I would resent being the object of a religious person's missionary zeal, I would not endeavor to convince anyone that to question the existence of god is profitable or comforting. I think that my skepticism has led me to read and to explore books and concepts which would anathema to theists, that my life has been more interesting to me because of my abandoning organized religion. I do not necessarily reject the idea of a creative deity, I see that possibility in a different way from the Genesis mythology.

I do. Many of my friends are Christian, and they are good people

I would never date someone who is overly religious though. Just too much of a gap there, plus I won't be raising any kids in that environment.

I think a lot of their belief system is based on how they were raised, and they aren't really big into the "self-reflection" thing.

I don't believe in the God of Abrahamic religions because it reeks of men trying to control other men of lesser status, plus those other people walking around in skirts giving birth.

Man made.

Yes.

I left my religion because I appreciate everyone's belief. I felt in my heart, quite deeply, that a God who condemns a good person to Hell for lack of believing in him was wrong. There is no evidence against and for God. Many cultures have different beliefs that may work for them. A religion that discriminates against differences in belief was not a path I wanted.

So if there is a friend who is religious, I completely respect that. They can even talk to me about their beliefs - I have found inspiration from their views. But someone who persecutes based solely on religion will cause turmoil in a relationship with me.

Why don't I believe in any gods? I used to....but after a very long and painful journey of soul-searching and questioning, I realized I *couldn't* believe in any of them anymore. Ask yourself why you don't believe in Ra or Quetzalcoatl, and you'll have an understanding as to why I don't believe in your god anymore.

As for maintaining comfortable relationships with religious people...absolutely. I don't feel the need to be friends with people who can't -- or won't -- respect my beliefs. We just don't discuss religion if we have differing beliefs, unless we decide to have a respectful, civil debate (which we occasionally do).

If the religious person is open minded and doesn't preach at me. Christianity never once, and I mean once give me anything in return. I gave all I had and them some. I sank into a dark hell hole of emptiness. I came into the light after leaving christianity, got back my sanity and my freedom. It is a death cult. When a group lives solely for after death, it is a death cult.
