Hi. My world civilization teacher marked this answer wrong on my test and I would like to prove him wrong. He says that the "12 followers of Jesus Christ were called APOSTLES" but growing up in church and being a very strong Christian, I was always taught it was the 12 DISCIPLES. Please let me know if I am correct or if the teacher is correct.
*If you are too immature to answer this question or are going to put something stupid or something that is not relevant to the point, then PLEASE do not answer.

Sorry; I did not put the test question on here. The test question asked:
"The twelve close followers of Jesus Christ were called ??????????"

The teacher did not have what time period or if he meant when Jesus was alive or after his death. So are we both technically right?

The definition of "apostle" and "disciple" is slightly different. All of the apostles were disciples, but not all disciples are apostles.

The definition of "disciple" is: " a learner, pupil, disciple". (see the first link below)

The definition of "apostle" is: " a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders," (see the second link.)

Now, to answer the question, you are both right. They are called the "twelve disciples" (See Matthew 10:1) and they are called the "twelve apostles" (see Matthew 10:2)!

Apostle Vs Disciple

it may be a thing to try to see if you guys can come to middle ground on it. They were called Follwers so then that makes them disciples but after the death and resurection they became apostles. Since he worded it as "followers" i would vote for disciples. An apostle is someone that helps establish a church.

Like i said, Maybe you guys can come to some middle ground but go in with a bible dictionary or a concordance at least to show him the real meaning of the words.

God Bless

Your teacher was correct.

Disciple means "taught one"

Apostle means "One who is sent out with a specific mission, message, or purpose"

Technically the apostles were also disciples. But not all the disciples were apostles.

The 12 were chosen to be special disciples for a specific purpose - apostles.

Apostles and disciples are similar but not the same. While a disciple is any follower of Jesus Christ (c. 6 B.C.–A.D. 30), Jesus chose twelve special disciples to become his apostles (those sent on a special mission) and help spread the word that they believed Jesus to be the Son of God. According to the gospel of Matthew in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, the men were Peter (known also as Simon Peter), Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot. After Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus to the authorities, Matthias was named an apostle. The term apostle also referred to other early missionaries, such as Barnabas and Paul (known as Saul before becoming an apostle).

Education before Legislation Prohibition doesn't solve any problems, it just sweeps them under the rug. Out of sight, out of mind. Unfortunately for the people involved, that doesn't quite work so well. Preaching abstinence in school is pretty much the same thing as going in and introducing the "forbidden fruit factor." Plus it only makes them hide it and likely prevents them from getting the proper counsel and preventative measures available because they're afraid or embarrassed to talk about it. We can either try to teach children how to make wise decisions or we can continue to try to make their decisions for them. I tend to think the latter is little more than wishful thinking. Kids are going to do what they want. They're curious and they're hormonal. If you honestly believe that your reasons exceed the power of teenage hormones, you've probably forgotten what it was like to be that age. The problem is not abortion. It's the prevalence of unwanted pregnancies. Adoption is a reasonable alternative, but people's choices are their own. I don't think it's right to abort a child, but it's even worse to skip over the cause of the problem to address the symptoms at the cost of individual freedom. It may not be the right choice, but it's still a choice best left to the individual and the family, not the government.

An Apostle is someone who has been sent by the Lord. A disciple is someone who is going through the process of being trained. Jesus had many disciples but only 12 apostles. He had to disciple them before He could send them out as Apostles.

ἀπόστολος
apostolos
ap-os'-tol-os
From G649; a delegate; specifically an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (“apostle”), (with miraculous powers): - apostle, messenger, he that is sent.
