I need some effective and cost-efficient employee sales incentives. My employees don't seem to be very motivated and since the business is new, I can't afford a lot. Thanks!

the best incentive is money,

Set a sales goal and offer a bonus if they reach it. You could always work out a certain percentage of the sales that will not impact you greatly financially as the revenue of the additional sales will offset the bonus. Over time keep increasing those sales goals and offering them new Bonuses.

Everybody likes money and it given them a higher level of participation in the common goal of making money.

Ask sales people and they will say cash but research shows time and again that other forms of reward and recognition can be far more effective. Try creating fun, interactive ways for them to win - we have done things like hidden prize lips inside garden gnomes and first sale of the day gets to smash open a gnome to see what / if they have won. Do a mix of simple stuff i.e. a chocolate bar with other rewards - if you search for travel incentive vouchers, pamper incentive vouchers etc you can find rewards that can cost a few $$s but have got a much higher perceived value.

Create an incentive and an disincentive policy.

Monitor sales effectiveness based on the percentage of the quota that was met during a review period ( could be monthly or quarterly ).

Publicly recognize the top performer and the worst performer.

Give excellent premium for the CONSISTENT top performers.

Good salesmen prefer to work on commission. They get paid a certain percentage of total net sales for their territory whether the sale comes through the business or his effort. If a draw is instituted make it a minimum amount which will be offset by the commisions earned. Never make the draw too large for it will stifle effort.
