Let me start by saying that I am always a generous tipper, giving at the very minimum 15% for the poorest service I can think of but typically 20-25% for good service. I tip waiters, bartenders, delivery people, etc. I worked in the food and service industry for probably 6-8 years on and off as a waitress and bartender. I rarely got tipped on take out orders. If I did, it was usually from a regular customer or on an order that especially large.

Its been about 4 years since I've worked in this industry so I'm looking for guidance. I can't help feeling, lately, as if more and more places EXPECT you to tip on take orders. No one has come out and said anything.. its more of a feeling I get, or a look from them when I slide the receipt back to them. What do you think?? Do you tip on take out and, if so, how much??? Also... am I crazy or has it become a more recent development??

Nope, I don't do it. I tip for service. The cost of cooking is built into the meal.

And you're not crazy-- it's become more of an expectation to be tipped everytime somebody BREATHES near you.

Can't stand it!

To be honest -it style of relies upon on the resturaunt and how undesirable i'm at any given 2nd. yet nonetheless if I even have money to bypass right into a advantageous place and order out then yeah i'm going to go away a tip. in straightforward terms a advantageous thank you. no longer as much as i might a delivery guy to my residing house, that is 5-7 plus $. yet at a taco bell, while i'm particularly undesirable (the rationalization i'm going there interior the 1st place) probable no longer. a close by place with a tip jar? i could be embarrassed to no longer go away a tip. base line...I want I consistently had the money to go away beneficiant information for each individual!!! while i do no longer, I stay removed from the places I could. If I can afford to eat out (even takeout), then an extra dollar for someone who packages my food to go isn't going to break the bank. I do this in a restaurant where there is table service, not in a fast food place, of course. Someone took the time to answer the phone, take my order, package it, and ring me up, so they may have lost a tip somewhere on their tables, while they were taking care of me. It think it's the right thing to leave a dollar, anyway. If it's really busy, I leave two.

i used to tip 5-10%, usually a couple of bucks, but i stopped doing it for the last two times due to budget reasons. however, now i feel bad about it that i've been online searching for the general protocol.

if you're a regular at the restaurant as a eat-in diner or a takeout customer, definitely leave a couple of bucks - i'm gonna go back to the two places i haven't tipped at so i can tip them. it does take a little time to pack up the stuff, though not as much time as giving full service.

Personally, I don not tip for take out when I am picking up the food myself. The purpose of tipping is a "thank you" for good/great service when you have been waited on (i.e at the table/bar). If you are grabbing your food and heading out then why tip?

We tip on take out like when we go IN to get the food at a RESTAURANT.
I am a big tipper , too.
Sometimes, I just tell people to keep the change.
Talk about surprise!
I tip the gas attendant, cashiers, I've wanted to tip nice, helpful people at dept. stores, but they can't accept tips, so, oh, well,...................

I say no. However, I normally do. Only because their salaries are still the same. I dont tip as much because its unnecessary but a little thank you tip never hurts.
