There are many ancient floods, but none that were global as the Bible says. The legend is very old and pre-Biblical in that almost every society has their own flood story. It could be one source for the story, but it's European, so I doubt it.

I would not be surprised if it were the flood that the stories of both Noah and Gilgamesh are based on.

my understanding of the article is that this was not a flood which covered the planet and that many people survived it. it basically says that Noahs flood was a mythe.
