According to a website it means: That means we shouldn’t desire anything that belongs to another person. The covetous will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Does that mean you shall not desire somnething owned by another person for example: their boyfriend or top??

This Commandment includes all things that are thy neighbors, whether it be thier wife/husband, car, clothes, anything belonging to them. It is not saying that you cant ask God for one just like thiers if you wish. What God is speaking of here, is desiring this object so much as to wish the owner evil. Coveting often leads to Envy and then to strife. Once this course of thought begins, it can rage like a wild-fire causing you and the other person dismay.

There's a difference between admiring something "Hey, that's a pretty necklace you have on" and truly coveting it. Coveting it means you are envious, you think about how to get it for yourself, how you deserve it more than the other person, how much you dislike the other person for having it and flaunting it in front of you when you can't have it... Get the picture? Covetousness implies an obsession with a material or carnal desire.

That's a pretty good explanation. My pastor did a series on the 10 commandments this summer. What I took from the last sermon was this...

When you covet what someone else has, you are judging yourself as lacking...coveting leads to a loss of contentment with your life. This loss leads you to begin seeking contentment in possessions and other factors outside yourself and your relationship with God. "If I only had her boyfriend/top/car/house/whatever I would be happy." But none of those things can lead to true happiness...the romance fades, the top wears out, the car breaks down, the house becomes outdated and the cycle of wanting what you don't have continues.

God wants us to be content and he knows that true contentment lies in being grateful for the gifts he has given us...in accepting that the reason we don't have anything we don't have is that he knows we don't need it! God makes it clear that he will provide for all of our needs...if we judge what we need from his perspective, coveting isn't an issue...coveting becomes an issue when we begin judging what we need by looking at what other people have!

This means that you should not look at what other people have and want it for yourself.

To the previous responder before me, it is true that this is a hard commandment to follow, but nevertheless, it only shows just how human we are - Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" - the point of all the laws in the Old Testament were there for a reason. To show that we CANT keep all these laws, we can't obey all the commandments. That's why in the New Testament, we need Jesus - He was the only one perfect enough to take our sin for us.

Greed is the selfish desire for or pursuit of money, wealth, food, or other possessions, especially when this denies the same goods to others.

I want the house with the dormers and pool. We can't help that we want something better than we have but we are to pray that we can live the way God wants us to live.

It's another way of saying that you should be grateful for the things you have and not to agonize over the things your don't.
