HI there...if a needle is ingested it will puncture the intestinal tract and can be life-threatening within a short period of time and each incident is different from the next so no known exact amount of time is known. Ideally, if you can have your sewing confined to a room where your kitty isn't allowed, this will ensure that no accidental ingestion can occur. If you feel this may have happen, you would ned to rush your kitty to a veterinary hospital immediately since this requires emergency surgery.

Liver failure or better known as hepatic lipodisis ( http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=217 ) is caused by many things, such as ingesting toxic substances (e.g. plants, small string-like substances, human foods: here's a list of those foods: http://www.peteducation.com:80/article.cfm?cls=0&cat=1276&articleid=1029 ) , not being able to eat for several days, feline diseases, age... so much to list. The symptoms vary, from vomiting, not eating, drinking, rapid weight loss, change in appearance, personality, sleeping more than usual, meowing more than usual, etc.

Cat flu is better known as feline upper respiratory infection (URI). This is a virus which requires antibiotics to treat the secondary infections as they can become life-threatening if not addressed quickly. Here is more about URI and it's symptoms and how it's treated: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/feline_upper_respiratory.html

If you meant fleas rather than flu: Fleas can be transported by several ways...outdoor/indoor pets easily can become infested. It can be brought in on our shoes, clothing from us walking into our homes. It's not too common, however in heavily infestated regions it is common. Using Advantage, Frontline Plus are the best ways to manage preventive flea infestation BEFORE it happens. More on fleas: http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/fleB.html

The only way to know if a cat has a fever is to take their body temperature rectally. Cat's body temp is 100 - 102.5F : http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1670&articleid=1082 Cats with a fever tend to behave more lethargic, loose appetite, etc.

If you believe your cat isn't feeling well, please never hesitate to contact your vet again and discuss this with them over the phone. If they believe your cat warrants a visit they will be inclined to indicate as such.

diet causes flus and can cause liver damage too...... you should have a urinalisis on your cat to be sure the ph levels are good at least once a year and there are no crystals in the urine. this is a good preventive measure and only cost about $30... and if need be you can put cat on special diet from vet.

FLUS in male cats can be fatel if they get a urinary blockage. They can die within 2 days because thier body fills up with poisen because they are unable to pee

symtems of blockage are..... cat will strain for long periods of time or lay/sleep in litter box, cat may meow or howl when trying to pee in litter box.... cat will become bloded in the abdomen area under belly by back legs, will feel real hard and bigger than usual, and will be very painfull for cat when you touch it.... cat will not eat/ or drink, and will become lethargic

FLUS in females is same, but they are not at high risk for blockage... but FLUS can be controled with diet...more water cat drinks the better.. very important..lots of water

check into PET INSURANCE... for cats it is only about 12 - 20 $ a month... and will pay for sicknesses....so you dont have to come up with a few thousand dollars if a life threatning situation should arise. All EMERGENCY clinic require payment before they will treat your animal unfortunately. PET INSURANCE... is a good deal!

I dont see how a cat would or could swallow a needle...but you should use great caution here..... if you drop them alot.. try using a felt drop under your sewing area.. so you can easily spot any needles you drop..

if you suspect your cat swallowed a needle you should take it to the vet....asap.. dont wait!

just an idea of how much an unexpected life theatning emergency will cost you...$3400.00 This was my experience with my cat, at the time i did not have pet insurance. That was for 2 days at the emergency hospital.... then 1 nite his reg vet.. 3 vet visits... a specialist to do surgery, and followup hospital stay 5 days.....

best of luck to you!

"could cats live a week if they swallowed a needle?"

It all depends on how the needle traveled through the cat. An x-ray would show right away if an animal swallowed a needle.

"how do cats get liver failure?"

From eating something that is toxic. Hepatitis can also cause liver failure.

"how do they get flus?"

The same way humans do, from viruses. This is why they need to be vaccinated.

"what behavor should i watch for if something like these happen?"

Any behavor that is not normal for your cat. With liver failure, look for the eyes to show a yellow color.

Needles are dangerous, I sew too and one of mine grabbed a threated needle once and tried to eat it as he ran (I chased him down and got it out but he'd gotten the threaded part almost all the way down).

An X-ray will show any needle, since it's metal. A needle can be pushed by pressure to leave the digestive tract and pierce the liver, heart, any organ it's pressed in the direction of, so it is serious. If you have any question about a needle being inside, get an X-ray.

Liver failure isn't anywhere near as common as kidney failure, but that's something the vet would have to diagnose. You can't tell in a cat just by looking at it. They need to send out a blood test and get the panel back. That shows how the organs are functioning.

You seem to be putting an awful lot of worried energy into this problem. I've kind of learned that what you worry about the most tends to happen, just because you think about it so much that your thoughts can accidentally lead you into doing things that will make the situation happen. As you've said that nothing has happened yet, try to be thankful for that and do things to safeguard your house as you would safeguard it for a little toddler. From one cat lover to another, here are some suggestions:

1. Always put your needles back in a place isolated from your cats. The material part of a sewing basket lid is one suggestion. If you stick it in there and close the lid, there's no way the cat can open it.

2. You can also try keeping the place where you store your needles (or the basket you put them in) in a cupboard.

3. Try buying the cats a lot of other toys to play with so they will be elsewhere when you are sewing and have your needles out.(you may even want to give them these toys only at the times when you are sewing so it becomes a novelty to them at those times)

4. Regarding your cat's response to food: I'm assuming you feed her commercial cat food (as most pet owners do.) But I've heard it can be much better for them if you feed them raw food (that is to say, raw fish.) I haven't done a lot of research into this, but it seems to be better for their digestive systems.

Best of luck :)

Holy cow, those are a lot of possibilities. Only a vet could make the correct diagnosis.

Many vets will have some sort of payment plan if you can't come up with the whole thing. Besides, a general check up isn't that expensive anyway.

If that cat is as dear to you as a child is to its mother, then don't stop to ask us. I don't mean that to offend you. I just mean that when there are major concerns, it's best to consult a professional right away. All of us that respond will only be guessing.

Cats can die from ingesting sewing needles, they cannot digest them and they could very likely pierce an organ/intestine. They can get flu just like humans. As for liver failure, ask your vet for symptoms etc.

im sure cats can get all that stuff the same way we can and i aplaud you in keeping funds aside to keep up with your animals needs....but keep your needles picked up. the likelyhood of a cat swallowing a whole needle is crazy though the most they would probably do is play with one...cats are smarter than your giving them credit for...i mean would you put something sharp down your throat...please dont say yes.
