Under the NATO treaty, if a non-NATO country attacks a NATO member the NATO treaty states that in effect all NATO countries have been attacked and NATO is placed on a defense footing and and all NATO member contribute to the Defense of the NATO member as if it was them that was being attacked. An overall plan is formed under NATO command, but countries do have some leeway on who commands their countries forces.
If a NATO country attacks a non NATO country then NATO members have no obligation to participate, although in some situations some NATO countries will. Many NATO countries supported the U.S. invasion of Afganistan and they still have troops there. But most if not all NATO members decided not to participate in the United States invasion of Iraq.
It's not so clear now that the Cold War is over. But when the Soviet Union and it's allies placed armed forces near Gernmany's border, all Nato countries sent forces to bases in Western Europe and in the 70s and 80s NATO had a lot of armies, air bases positioned in Western Europe -- armies numbering in the hundreds of thousands. NATO's navies sent ships and nuclear submarines to be positioned near the USSR in the Pacific.

NATO will invoke Article 5 of the Treaty of Washington, which says that an attack on any member state of the alliance is an attack on all. That's precisely what they did after the attack on America of September 11,2001. Just about every nation has provided troops to fight in Afghanistan, because it was deemed by the NATO council that Afghanistan was the country giving sanctuary to the group which planned and carried out the attack on America. Even France is involved, though they are no longer a member of the military arm of NATO.

A NATO ally, if attacked, MAY call on the alliance if need be. If not the other nations are not obliged to go to war with it.
As for has it happened, Argentina attacked Great Britian and as a member of NATO it was asked if it wanted help and refused, therefore the rest of the alliance left Argentina alone during the Falklands War.

Section 5 says that all signatory countries will provide military assistance to the attacked country.
Some signatory countries (France, Germany) do not seem to understand that specific provision.
