Well, let's see now. When the military is in action, they probably don't have enough guns or ammo. When someone in the gov't. is "picking" through their budget, the military has too many and is over spending. Due to security clearances which you have not demonstrated to my satisfaction, I am unable to tell you how many M16's we have, buy, store, make, etc. I'm sure you understand. I mean, I could tell you but then , you know what I'd have to do, right?! Guard Dog

More than the enemy I hope....

BTW, I dont think the M16 is standard issue anymore due to the size. They're probably going with a more compact gun that is more suited to urban warfare where confined space fighting is the norm.

M16's? None.

They have been phased out in favor of the M4 and other carbine models.

As far as I am aware most services with the exception of the Marines are moving towards M4's as the standard combat weapon.

Millions I'm sure

When I was in, and this was a long time ago, I saw dozens of them.

Round figures, I'd say about two and a half buttloads.

Enough for every soldier to carry one; plus plenty in storage in arsenals to reissue one to every soldier plus spare parts in depots to perhaps make enough of them to reissue to each soldier again.

SOunds crazy, but yes, we have enough complete rifles and spare parts to have enough battle-ready rifles for every member of the armed forces, including Reserves and National Guard.

Not sure it matters how many we have, but mayb we should focus on how many we're using...

"This is my weapon ! (holding his M16 rifle)
This is my gun! (grabs his crotch)
This is for killing! (rifle at present arms position)
This is for fun"! (grabs his crotch, again)
