So I saw the 45 used for about $450 I decided to buy since it looked in good condition. I being an idiot did not know difference between ACP and GAP (now I do). So was it a mistake getting this gun? I have not shot it I just got it 2 days ago. I have shot before many of times, but I guess i did not realize there would be difference between 45s. I cant afford a new one right now and I do need a gun for class. The only other used ones where 9mm. I wanted to get a 40 but could not afford new one and they did not have it.

Same here I thought they were all the same when it came to 45 for xds. I dont have small hands, it does fit nice, but my hands are big enough for an ACP.

I was just thinking if they let me swap it for maybe a new 9mm I might do that. But I am liking the idea of reloading.

Well they will provide GAP ammo for me in the class so I have decided to keep it. And take up the hobby of reloading. Also anyone know where I can get 45 GAP ammo for alot less?

You learned a tough lesson here in this situation. The handgun isn't the real problem, but you will find out shortly how expensive 45GAP ammunition is. That will cost you more in the long run. 45 ACP isn't cheap anymore either, but 45 GAP is a relatively new "Novelty" cartridge, unlike the established and popular S&W 40 caliber cartridge. Use the XD for your class to get you through. You can always sell it later and get a conventional 45 ACP..

*45GAP isn't any more or less "easier" to handle as far as recoil is concerned

Well, I am a fan of the 9mm. If I liked shooting and didn't reload there is no way in heck I would own a 45 gap. You have a good gun with an effective round. It is just too expensive to shoot without reloading.

Assuming I wanted to shoot often and did not reload I would get the 9 in a heart beat. If I am the type of guy who doesn't shoot that often but likes to have a gun around then I would keep the gap and hope they are still making ammo two years from now.

I really encourage you to do some research and giving some thought on getting the 9. Do you want to be a skilled shooter or are you going to rely on a marginal improvement in balistics? Your financial situation at this time requires you to make that choice.

Well, other than ammo cost there really is nothing wrong with the .45 GAP. As it becomes more popular the price of ammo will come down. One additional advantage with any .45, you're shooting a wide enough bullet that in a pinch even ball ammo will work for defensive purposes.

Best.

Shoot the GAP, just start reloading. It's a good hobby, lets you tailor rounds for maximum accuracy and reliability, and it will sure make it cheaper to shoot the dang thing. It really doesn't take long to run off a couple of hundred rounds, even with a single stage press--if you don't reload you might not understand, but don't worry. You can get started with new Lee equipment for about $100 (The Lee Reloader Single Stage Press Kit is about $25 from Midway--link below), you'll need dies, brass, bullets, powder, etc., but the Press Kit comes with a book that gives you step by step instructions. You might even be able to pick up everything you need used (just check the prices before you buy anything used) at quite a savings. I started with a Lee Single Stage Press and loaded thousands of rounds on it--I'm more high tech now, but there's nothing wrong with Lee--their stuff works just fine.

I really like the XD compact, I ran it thru my own personal testing, which is much more rigorous and extensive than most do, and it passed with flying colors. So much so that it is now my wife's personal ccw pistol. I would never allow her to carry it if I didn't have absolute faith in it and I like the fact that the second magazine is extended to hold more rounds, and to fit my large hands. The S&W M&P is a very good appearing firearm, but I have not run it thru any testing, so can't give a solid answer. I think you are going with the best self defense round there is. I have carried pistols chambered in .45acp for CCW for over 27 years both on and off duty and really, I only change to another firearm when hiking or hunting. shoot safe

There is nothing wrong with the 45 GAP as far as performance goes. The ammo is a bit more expensive I believe, and since the cartridge is shorter, you don't have as much flexibility in the bullets and loads available, but it certainly is an effective round, and if you have smaller hands, is an easier gun to control than the .45 ACP. Unless you have a specific problem with that round, I wouldn't get rid of it.

The .45 Glock Automatic Pistol [GAP] round is nearly identical to the .45 ACP [Automatic Colt Pistol] round in ballistics. I would not be discouraged about this purchase, unless you absolute MUST have a .45 ACP pistol.
