Christmas? I have friends that are atheists and some family that is, but I don't understand how they can celebrate Christmas when the whole point is that Jesus was born on that day. (I'm Christian) Sorry if I sound ignorant, I'm only 14, and I don't mean to come across as rude but I am honestly curious.

Sunsets5, some answerers have told you that Christmas is a "pagan" celebration.

How can this be true? If it were, the pagans would have had to invent Christmas. And they didn't, of course. The pagans had their own winter holidays that they celebrated. But the Christians instituted the celebration of the birth of Christ. So, if the Christians instituted it, then it's a Christian celebration.

People here are telling you: "Jesus was born in the Spring," and another says, "Jesus was born in August".

(?)

They pretend to know, but they don't know. "Look it up," they say. And when you do, you'll get at least 12 different answers.

The actual date of His birth is not something that the early Christians were too worried about. Nor should we be.

Here in the U.S. we used to celebrate George Washington's birthday on Feb 22, and Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Feb 16. But nowadays both are rolled together into Presidents' Day (Feb 20) and usually the federal holiday is moved to the nearest Monday. The actual date isn't the point. The commemoration is the point.

People were celebrating the solstice for thousands of years before Jesus was even born. The early Christians took the holiday over for themselves.

There is no proof at all the Jesus was born on December 25. That day was picked as a birthday in the 4th century.

Christmas was originally a pagan holiday which was adopted by the christians, which has since become a secular holiday.

Think about this way. When is a better time for us to enjoy spending time with our families and exchanging gifts as tokens of our love and appreciation? Most people celebrate a winter holiday -- be it christmas, hanukkah, or kwanzaa -- and there is no other time of year when most people have a holiday from work. Therefore, we take advantage of the season to celebrate that we've had another year with our loved ones.

They don't celebrate it, those days are used as an opportunity to get together with family.

________

Most Christian know that Jesus wasn't really born on Dec. 25 so you are not shocking anyone with that well known peace of information. It is just the uniform day that most Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. In some other countries they do it on another day I think Dec. 8.

If you like you can use all those dates as another reason to spend time with your family too.

People celebrate the day because they traditionally have done so. It's always been a party time due to the winter solistice. The reason for the 'season' is WINTER.

BTW, the only thing Christian about the day is the name. Everything else, including a birthday for a crucified savior born of a virgin (Mirtha), was stolen from the pagans.

Probably the chance to spend time with their family and exchange gifts of love.

Other non-Christians are celebrating the Winter Solstice, the holiday that predated Christmas.

Aug is Jesus birthday not Dec.

King Charlamain converted to Christianity and changed the name of the Roman Pagan Holiday from the feast of San taurni ( the feast of Saturn) to the improper date of Jesus birthday. Charlamain claimed this a religious Holiday and been celebrated ever since. In today's world it is now used as a marketing concept to get people to BUY. Same as Easter, Valentines etc.

If you do research by looking for the truth yourself and not by the word of others you will see for yourself.

Please reference your history ,the time line dates and the history of King Charlamain. You will find that in History and events.

People in authority have a way of changing things to fit what is needed at the time.

Don't use a religious base for your information if you are truly searching for the truth.

It Will require a lot of reading and you must be prepared to keep searching until YOU know the truth. When it comes to religion there are so many different views and opinions that are passed on and on and everyone forgot to check themselves before believing it to be the Truth.

Try searching things from the History Channel or rent Documentaries on these subjects.

Good Luck in your search. Please don't believe me search and find your own truth.

I celebrate alcohol consumption and not saying grace at dinner. By the way, were Jesus real, which he isn't, would have been born around passover, which is way past Christmas. You're actually celebrating a pagan holiday.

Have a good look at the scriptures, and you'll notice that all of the circumstances point to the idea that Jesus was actually born in the spring.

Throughout recorded history, and most probably long before, people have observed the winter solstice with feasts.

Christmas is more of a tradition ... and I think everyone can agree with me .. atheist .. christian .. or not .. that Christmas is a time to be with family. To take a break from the world.. and spend time with those you really matters.
