You should start with your state's Early Learning Standards, or the development standards the center is using. For example, we are Head Start, High Scope program in PA, so we start by choosing a Key Developmental Indicator (these are directly aligned with the state's Early Learning Standards) to focus on for the day. Then we choose an activity and story based on that Indicator for our Small Group Time. Then we make sure that transition activities also line up with that indicator and choose a simple material or activity to add to the room during our free choice time (we call it work time) that also supports our Indicator for the day. Understanding what basic skill or concept you want to teach with your lesson makes it simple to select an appropriate activity and book to support what you want to do.

What is the age group of your class? How long do you allot for curriculum? What other things do you have available in your classroom to follow-up with your lesson plan? At my school, we "web" out the theme/topic we are planning to cover for the month. Then, depending on age, we brainstorm all the ways we will tackle that theme. From large motor movement activities to finger plays, books, art, manipulatives, you name it. Then, when you have one of those days that nothing seems to be going right, you can look up to your web (which we hang on the wall) for additional ideas.
