The first answerer was incorrect, believe me.

The 20GB and 60GB PS3's can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game ever made because they have the Emotion Engine Chip in them.

The 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games.

The 80GB PS3 can play both PS1 and PS2 games, but it can't play as many as the 60GB and 20GB PS3 because it uses Software Emulation to be backward compatible.

The 60GB (discontinued but still available for a time) PS3 plays 99% of all PS2 games. There are a few obscure titles that don't work. The 80GB plays about 80% of PS2 titles due to the fact that it relies on software emulation instead of hardware. Firmware updates will increase this number according to Sony. The 40GB and 20GB (discontinued, not available) do not play PS2 games.
