Wow, somebody like to type. As for beverages, tea and beer were about the most common after water. Sushi did not become the art that it is today really until the 20th century, although it is impossible to know how far back rice and seafood were wrapped in seaweed. Probably a very long time as it is a convenience.
As for fish a great deal more of the fish was preserved than what we are used to today. Salt Cod was a very important commodity.
