You can make your own version of hamburger helper by buying egg noodles, a lb of hamburger and a can of Chunky vegetable beef soup.
Chili is pretty cheap. Buy a lb of hamburger, chili seasoning, a can of chopped tomatoes and a can of kidney beans. Add a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix and you have a nice hot meal for under $10.
Tomato soup and grilled cheese is cheap. Ramen noodles are very cheap. Spaghetti can be cheap. Get the jar of sauce, noodles and a lb of hamburger, plus a loaf of frozen garlic bread. Again under $10. Good luck. Being on a budget can be very hard!

Bake a fresh sweet potato in the m/w oven. You can make it sweet (butter, cinnamon sugar, pancake syrup, or brown sugar) or you can make it savor (butter, bacon bits, cheddar cheese). Sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of nutrition.

Dry beans or peas paired w/ Rice. You can season w/ a bit of sausage or ham, but together, they make a complete protein and are cheap.

Ground beef. Get the leaner variety and you have less fat to pour off that you've paid for. You can make spaghetti, meatloaf, homemade "hamburger helper", salisbury steaks, meatballs, soup, etc.

Chicken thighs or leg quarters. Find them on sale, freeze individually (or in 2's or 3's, whatever will feed your family) and you can do a lto with them.
