What do you mean on the job that is assigned to you? In the Army, you get to pick your job according to what you are qualified for before you go to basic training. The Army is the only branch you get to do that.

In the Air Force, based on your ASVAB scores, you can choose 3 jobs that you'd like and one general area you'd like. You get assigned a job based on your choices and the needs of the Air Force. You could have a guaranteed job before you start basic training or you might not find out what you'll be doing until right before you get out of boot camp. Your preferences are taken into account, but ultimately it depends on the needs of the Air Force.
Also, once you've been in a few years, you can be eligible to cross-train into a different career field. Once again, those choices are limited to what job openings the Air Force has at that time.
If everyone always got exactly what they wanted, then there'd be no one to fill crappy jobs. I imagine other branches of the military are similar.

Yes but you have to know you have a say! You can come in the service in one of three categories. #1, Guaranteed job, means if you want a specific job you can get it however because of training start dates and recruiting goals you may have to wait up to a year to leave for basic training. #2, Next is Guaranteed Career field, meaning, for example lets say you wanted to work with electricity. In basic training you pick from a list of jobs related to working with electricity. You could be an electrician, an aircraft electrician, a ship electrician for example. The branch of service will put you where they need you the most with in that career field. #3, last is the General career field, you don't care what you do, you just want to join. The military will put you where they have the greatest need for people at that moment (provided you meet the prerequisites).

The good news just like the person above me said the ARMY offers MOS (military Occ. Specialty) which is whatever job you want provided you qualify. However every other branch you get to fill out a request, but you are assigned where they need you.
Edit: way to be Army strong, he beat me too it. Love that guy (not like that) he's so smart.

stunning. some fool troll this morning asked approximately Ted Kennedy's provider, as though Kennedy's lack thereof could have been someway sufficient to mitigate the shortcoming of provider by potential of the chickenhawks. (seems Kennedy did certainly functionality an enlisted guy interior the army, 1951-1953.) Cheney is on checklist as asserting he did no longer serve in Vietnam by way of fact he had "different priorities."

In the US Military, YES!! Although they cannot select a specific job, they CAN select a specific career field. For instance, my son selected the career field of Aviation Electronics (about 130 specific jobs within that career field), and his schooling started him off at the most basic of instruction. Those who did well in each section of the schooling, went on to the next section, which was more technically difficult... so as new Marines reached their maximum potential in training within that career field, they were assigned to open jobs within their skillset... and those who continued to master each section of training moved on to the next highest level and more job opportunities.

Yes there are many different Military Occupational Specialties.
Though all of them are not open to everyone or at all times there is usually a good selection to chose from, If you qualify.

Ye,s depending on your test scores. Now the recruiter may lie to you about it, they get better bonuses for jobs that are needed at the time of your enlistment. You have to stick your ground t get what you want if your score is high enough like I said before.

I got what I wanted in the Navy. The only time you don't in the Navy is if you don't qualify for the job you want or if its full at the time. If it is full at the time you can just wait until it opens up.
