Yes, it is a non interference engine. When the timing belt breaks on non interference engines, no harm will be done to the engine. Starting in 1993 when Volvo came out with the 850, 960 and later models were interference engines. And if these timing belts break.....valves stay open and pistons collide with valves causing costly repairs$$$$$ My advice to those who own cars with interference engines is to spend the $500-? when t-belt is due for replacement versus spending 5 times more when it's too late.

According to VOLVO this engine is an Interference design, if the belt broke it is simple enough to replace the belt and hope it did not bend valves, if the the valves are damaged you will know cause it will either not run or it will run very poorly. I have actually replaced broken belts on 2 of these with good luck, had no damage. But VOLVO states it is an interference engine

YES THE 8 VALVE RED ENGINES WILL ALL FREEWHEEL WITHOUT DAMAGE WHEN TIMING BELT BRAKES.
some 9 series cars had a red engine with a dohc 16 valve head and balance shafts these are rumored to be valve benders but are rare. [the 2 i service have never let their belts break and probabley never will]

if youre searching into kind and velocity/potential, ur absolutely using the incorrect motor vehicle. those volvos are tank, and regardless of the reality that they lack potential, those engines will run you over 300K miles. go away this motor vehicle on my own, get something else for potential
