Unfortunately you're traveling at one of the most expensive times of the year to travel so cheap fares will be difficult to find. $300 doesn't seem too bad for the distance and time of year you're going, you might consider traveling on Christmas Day, sometimes the fares will be cheaper, and Jan. 2 is a very heavy day for air travel, if at all possible try a few days after that and see what you can find. Good luck.

There are prices out there but you're traveling on the worst days of the year (Day after Christmas and New Years) I suggest bump up a day:
Instead the 25th leave the 26
Instead January 2 come back on the 3rd.
There, you probably find some cheap tickets around or a little less the $300. I've search for some flights between SAN and CHI and they're more then $300. Hope this helps..

Does Southwest fly into San Diego, if so check out their prices, they are usually cheap and the earlier you buy them, the cheaper they may be.
Try Priceline.com - you name your own price for the ticket. Put in 300 (or less) - the only way your card will get charged for the ticket is if they can get you a ticket for that price. If not, nothing will be charged. Worth a shot.
Or if you know anyone who works for an airline, ask if they have "buddy passes" for you to use. Your child may have to fly stand-by, but it's worth trying too.
Good luck
*** I'm not sure who your wireless carier is - but Tmobile is advertising free airline tickets if you get new service with them from now till Thanksgiving. Maybe that's an idea.

try "18K Travel"
http://www.ytbtravel.com/18ktravel
If you can leave on Dec 25 and come back on Jan 1, there are three non-stop flights for $269. This price includes the taxes and fees. However, there is no guarantee that the price for these flights be around for very long. You will need to fly in to Chicago O'Hare (ORD). Midway airport in Chicago is much more expensive.
Happy holidays.

$300 to me sounds like a pretty good deal for the dates you are looking at. You just have to do a bunch of research, try orbitz, travelocity, kayak and the airline websites themselves to see what you can come up with. Try shifting your dates around a little bit, if at all possible. Unfortunately, with the time of year it is, and how high gas prices are these days, finding something much lower than $250-300 is probably not going to happen.

check this: WWW.PRICELINE.COM
--you can NAME YOUR OWN PRICE.
I have gotten Hilton Hotel rooms, regularly $ 275 a night for $ 58 a night for a three night stay in New Jersey. Not sure if they do airline seats, but check it out.
