Is it common to get a sore on the side of your tongue & on your upper gums with herpangina? That's where my son has them. We took him to emergency today & we were both diagnosed with herpangina. I just have one white spot near my tonsils. I keep worrying that maybe they misdiagnosed my son because they didn't take any tests & from what I've been reading on the net it's not common to have them on your gums.

My son had a fever off & on for about 3 days but now it's gone. He's drinking ok but will hardly eat & it might be worth noting that he's had bad breath!

I didn't treat adults, but I would think herpangina is uncommon in that age range. The lesions in herpangina are usually in the back of the throat.

Hand-foot-mouth disease has lesions in the back of the throat as well as on the palms, soles and buttocks. Many times there are only a few lesions.

If your child has many lesions on gums and tongue with high fever, he might have gingivostomatitis due to Herpes simplex, the same virus that causes fever blisters. I doubt that a doctor would have missed this: such toddlers are pretty sick.

All three of the above conditions are accompanied by fever, often 102 and higher.

Assuming your child is not sick, he might just have aphthous stomatitis, presumably caused by a virus.

He might have contracted a cold sore from coming into contact with something or someone contaminated with the disease. Did he drink from a used cup when you weren't looking, or did a relative infected with a cold sore kiss his mouth? Either way, you'd better get this checked out with a pediatrician.
