Sounds like a bent shift-fork in the tranny...sorry.

Sounds like an automatic that the rpm's go up intermittently while in 4th and torque converter lock up. Low line pressure can cause this and not set a transmission code. Have the Auto trans and engine codes scaned your looking for P0740 tcc and P0745 line pressure codes. There is no fix except purchasing a Nissan remanufactured gear box and either replace the radatior or add a seperate oil cooler. Radatior trans cooler holds metal you don't want in the new transmission + it cools the engine better.

I have a pathfinder and its the best!
Is it doing it all the time? I had a pulsar that was doing the same thing and unfortunately it was the tranny:(
How is it in 5th?
