Cipollini are another type of small onion. They are very different from pearl onions. They are flattened in shape and very well suited for roasting. In contrast, the pearl onion is better suited for boiling.

Pearl onions are actually a type that does not get large. Small onions can be produced by planting very late so they cannot develop much size before going dormant.

The yellow onion is generally milder and sweeter. Also a few years ago, the agricultural department at Texas A&M developed a onion called the 1015 onion. It was mild and sweet to taste.
