I own (or, have owned) several firearms. Some are registered; some are not. (They were bought prior to all the registration laws, and are 'grandfathered', which gives the lie to the whole point of the exercise.)

The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution was made quite clear, after reasoned debate. Extensive debate. The point was to give Joe Citizen the ability to answer a call to arms, to defend against enemies from without and within, as well as your average street brigand, or highwayman.

It's left unsaid today, but part of the arguments were that citizens could band together and 'correct' a government that had over-stepped its bounds. The founders knew that from time to time, the wrong people would get into office.

Having an armed citizenry would be a check on government extravagance. The idea is that office-holders would fear the public on a daily basis, not once every two years, during an election.

An honest government has nothing to fear from an armed citizenry. A government which seeks to limit the armed citizenry is suspect.

Nope. It's none of the government's business and it never will be.

Guns must be registered so that any gun used in a crime will be traced as to its owner.
