You should still be able to copy them with Windows Explorer (My Computer). If you can get to a machine with Word 2007, this will give you access. If you can get to a machine with an older version of Word, Microsoft has a free Compatibility Pack you can download to get access to the 2007-version files.

Good luck.

You should have kept track of the trials or downloaded and used Open Office - but I guess you know that.

Open Office, freeware, can be downloaded at:

Off the top, I would suggest going into Safe Mode to see if you can find the file, then copy the file to another source like a disk or flashdrive. However, you will not be able to open a 2007 document with an older version of Word. You might be able to convert it to a text file which you could then open in an earlier version. You would lost any special formatting, but at least you would have the text. There is a free online converter at www.media-convert.com

I know it is frustrating, but that is the reason as a sys admin I have always preached on backups. The only quick thing you can do is either purchase from the book store, retailer, or MS site a copy of the student/teacher office. It is around $150. Always do a dump to CD in a portable format. You can try to download a copy of Open Office. It is free to the user and may be able to convert and open the files. It is quite compatible with the MS products.

Try registering your copy of Office with Microsoft, (you can do it on-line).

As it's a free trial version you will probably have to pay for the full version so have your credit or debit card handy.

It's probably the only way you're going to be able to get your research paper back.
