Baby signs are not a full language; it's just a handful of vocabulary items that babies and parents can use together for simple household communication. But there would be no way to discuss, say, for example, nuclear physics in baby signs. This kind of language could be called a "pidgin". ASL is a complete language, which its users can use for all of their communication. I'm not sure if baby signs were originally based on ASL. If they are, then baby signs would simply be a very limited set of ASL vocabulary items that are taught to babies.

ASL is a full language with a rich vocabulary and grammar. Baby sign language is just a few words. It's like the difference between a baby saying "mama" and a teenager saying "Hi Mom, what's for dinner?"

My aunt and uncle teaches sign language to my little cousins (they started teaching them really early) and as far as I have seen I don't really see a difference between ASL and baby sign language. In the baby sign language they teach them things like thirsty, hungry, milk, cookie, and so on, the simple stuff. If there is a major difference I'm not really aware of it.

A deaf person or in my case my deaf professor gets so worked up about that.
Not all of the signs are ASL -- some of them are modified to something a little easier for your baby's hands.

I'm just guessing but I'd say that baby sign is much less complicated, fewer signs and simpler hand signs. I believe that ASL also has signs for individual letters, baby sign is for certain words, like mommy, daddy, milk, etc.

People who teach and use sign language with their babies use ASL. It's the same thing.

Baby sign uses signs from ASL, they just don't use the prepositions, the complicated verbs, the complex concepts of humanity.
