Materialist in the sense of someone who wants material goods above all else, well, that has little to do with religion and is a pretty stupid belief.
Whereas materialistic philosophy ie. "that which cannot be measured cannot be held to exist" is more rational than any other belief - in fact, the very fact that it is true is what powers the band gaps used in the microchips you are using to ask these questions.
