I'd say it's either because the recipes aren't exactly the same or because at home you have to do the cleanup!

But it's alot cheaper at home and you can have it when you want it without driving to the mall or wanting it during their hours.

The Orange Julius made at the mall has a special flavoring mix in it, and not just the basic orange juice, ice cream/milk, sugar, and ice. The home recipe is a mock recipe, not an exact duplicate.

Orange juice from concentrate
ice
icing (powdered) sugar

they use a special mix of finely ground sugar/dry milk/flavorings
