What is the matter with them?
America is always left alone to do the dirty work.
It is not fair.

The Europeans are smart enough to know that they don't need any war to assert global dominance. The EU economy is already dominating the world. The Euro currency is getting stronger by the day, while the US dollar is plunging further to all-time lows. So, why should they fight if they can have everything money could buy?. Money is power. And they know that.

I agree that war is "dirty work." That should make clear the answer to your question: War is to be avoided, if possible.

Whether it's possible to avoid war often depends on both sides, but there's no reason for Europeans or anyone else to rush to war if they believe diplomacy might still avoid it.

To put this in perspective, the U.S. spent over two years avoiding fighting World War II after it started. During that time, France, Poland, and China were overrun by the Axis powers.

I doubt that people from those countries or from the U.K. or the former Soviet Union regard the U.S. as having done nearly as much "dirty work" as they did.

While Britain stood alone against Nazi Europe, America was trading with Hitler. She continued to do so even after Russia was invaded by the Nazis. America traded with Japan and sold them strategic goods right up until Pearl Harbour. She got some of those strategic goods back, if you get my drift. Maybe Europeans don't like wars because they've experienced them first hand, unlike America, which only fights wars in other people's countries. There have been two major terrorist attacks on American territory. One was by Christian fundamentalists in Oklahoma, the other by Islamic fundamentalists in New York, but these were nothing compared with the devastation that went on in Europe while America did nothing except profit from the slaughter. The only two countries to benefit from WWII were America and Switzerland.

Europeans have a different mind set of war then America. When Americans think of WWI and WWII we think of our heroic releatives that fought in the war as heros liberating Europe. Now imagine yourself French or German and living first hand in the chaos of war. Having divisions of soldiers waging wars in your city and destroying everything around you (not because they wanted to, but because it was military nesesity).

While todays war are nothing compared to WWI and WWII you have to understand their weariness for wanting to move get heavily involved.

Also, Europe is involved in Iraq and Afghanistan. You have soliders from Norway, Georgia, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom to just name a few. Other theaters would be Kosovo that once again had soldiers throughout Europe fighting, and the first Iraq War even had the French fighting in it.

While not Europeans, we have several other allies throughout the world helping us such as the South Koreans and Austrillians helping too.

They are closer to the rest of the world than we are?

And I think that is slightly unfair... some European countries have joined us, but this has kind of been "our war" all along. It started with a terrorist attack on our country, so of course we are the most affected by it.
However there have been attacks in other countries too, and that hasn't led them to start a war on the scale that we have.
Who knows, really. They obviously didn't think this particular war was one they wanted to get involved in on a large scale. It's their right to decide that, although it can suck if we are depending on others for support.

For the past two thousand or so years, Europeans were the worst. Constantly bickering, besieging each other, going on "crusades", invading far-off lands to seize as colonies, attacking each other for their colonies, the list goes on.

This generally carried on with them until comparatively recently, while America profited off each party in two World Wars until they finally got involved when their foreign interests were at risk.

It's obvious. It's taken thousands of years of stupidity, but most Europeans have learned their lesson.

They aren't the superpower any longer. When you are the hegemon in the manner that USA is and Soviet Union and British Empire you are expected to settle disputes and to regulate the balance of power and trade. That and they don't have the military capability to go into lengthy wars.
