I usually ignore it, but you could say "Morning. Bit windy today, isn't it!"

The older people get, the more medication they are usually on, an done of the side effects of many types of medication is a build up of 'gas' in the body, which tends to make a break for it at times when you'd really rather it didn't!
The old guy could be turning around to see if anyone is there when he lets one go, and when he sees you quickly turns away in embarrassment.
Or he could be trying to lay off the blame!
The polite thing to do is ignore the whole thing, unless you can't take the 'after effects', in which case, move away.
Don't call him on it, because he's likely already embarrassed, and if he's not, he'll just blame YOU!
And remember, one day you'll be old and may need someone to give you a break on the letting one go at the checkout situation ...
Be nice ~ it may help the old guy stay dignified, and it won't hurt you at all!
Cheers :-)

It's funny that you mention this. An old geezer farted quite loudly as he passed by me in the grocery store and I couldn't help but laugh. But he didn't turn around when he farted. If he had I would've waved my hand back and forth in front of my face and say, "What stinks?"

they are probably deaf and can't hear it. But they know that there was a fart that just happened, but they have no idea how loud it was, and they hope that it was a silent fart. They can't be sure though.
So, they look around to see if anyone was nearby to hear it. And unfortunately for you AND him, you were there.
In earshot, and nose shot of his disgusting fart.
That's just my guess.
For all i know, he might have farted on purpose, and can hear just fine.

No, absolutely not! Why on earth would you want to embarass the poor guy, when he is obviously only at the mercy of his aging gall bladder? What's to gain? I would just smile at him as I looked directly at him, as if to say "hi how are you" and make sure I didn't appear to notice.

Why say something, and embarass the man? are you that cold? Just move away and ignore the situation.

The proper etiquette in this situation is to ignore it and pretend that you never heard it.
