I think they are referring to Revelation 14
Revelation 14 (NIV)
The Lamb and the 144,000
1Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they kept themselves pure. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among men and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. 5No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.
The Three Angels
6Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water."
8A second angel followed and said, "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries."
9A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, 10he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name." 12This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.
13Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on."
"Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them."

In the book of Revelation, but that is a metaphore. In I think 2 Samuel (or 1 Kings) David numbered the people of Israel (which was the church in that day) and God was angery so he let David choose which one of the punishments he would bring upon Israel, and God punished Israel because of that sin of David of numbering the people.
We are not to try to figure out how many people are going to become saved in this world. But we can be reasonably sure it is many more that the number listed above, yet we know for certain that it is only a tiney percentage of world population.
144,000 makes use of 12 x 12 x 1000 which are all very significant. We see 12 represented in many instances in the Bible in prominant ways; such as 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles, 12 gates of the New Jersusalem, 12 foundations of the wall of the New Jersusalem, and there are other instances which may seem more incidental. I personally know the metaphorical significance of some numbers but not most numbers. I do not know the significance of 1,000 or 12 unfortunately. I am certain 13 means "unexpected", that can be shown, and 2 means "work".

Paulo is correct the passage is Revelation 7:4
Let's look into it a little further for the meaning. We need to take it up in verse 1 and read through 17.
7:1-17 Chapter 7 forms a parenthesis between the sixth seal (6:12-17) and the seventh seal (8:1) and answers the question posed at the end of chapter 6. Two distinct groups will survive the divine fury: 1) 144,000 Jewish evangeltists on earth (vv. 1-8) and 2) their converts in heaven (vv. 9-17)

That is jehovah's witnesses belief. It does say 144,000 in the bible but in revolations. The end of the world. I am not sure what the number means (i believe that is all that will believe after the rapture) but I know for a fact that not only 144,000 are aloud in heaven. because Jesus said, "In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)

You are referring to the book of Revelation or the Apocalypse. Read the 7th Chapter. Twelve thousand was considered a perfect number in ancient times, and that was the number from each tribe of Israel. This totaled 144,000. This a symbolic number. Then in verse nine and ten it tells of the great number of Gentiles. After that it speaks of the angels. It does not say that only 12,000 were to be saved. We do not know any actual numbers of persons saved or condemned. Only God knows these things. There are many mysteries that we will never understand or know.

1After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. 2Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: 3"Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God." 4Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.
5From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

Why are these bible extracts worded differently? Someone must have edited the text somewhere along the line. Just wondering.

Revelations 7:4 is where it starts. It's mentioned again in Revelations 14 mentions it again. What these passages literally mean is up to debate.
