SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Religious leaders in the Salem-area are joining a nationwide movement to give sanctuary to certain undocumented immigrants.

The move comes after immigration enforcement raids that have been separating parents from their US born children, according to Gayle McDougle, the pastor of First Congregation United Church of Christ in Salem.

Participating churches in Salem don't plan initially to house noncitizens.

But they will connect people with legal counsel, offer English as a second language courses, provide know-your-rights training, create accounts for donations and establish a family resource center where immigrants can gather in times of need.

The move comes as Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed an executive order to bar undocumented immigrants in Oregon from getting a drivers' license.

I'm curious why these churches never complain about the fact that Mexico treats its citizens so horribly that they feel the need to leave the country.

Absolutely not. It is about time people spoke to the church and got that mess stopped. But I have been in this fight for a very long time and it is a fact that we have not been able to even mention Church involvements in smuggling illegal aliens.

If you can go to http://www.findarticles.com and ask for Catholic Church Illegal aliens, you will discover a huge number of articles supporting the process. Same thing for the Mormon Church too. Same place for good information also.

Consider, the United States essentially doesn't prosecute the illegal aliens or their employers - it would be some hypocritical to prosecute those who give them sanctuary.
What a mess this debacle has turned into - and a good portion of the blame is ours for turning a blind eye at the borders and not enforcing the laws that are already on the books.

No establishment of any type shall harbor illegals. It's not the purpose of a church to become a center for immigration violations

This is another reason the United States is having the problems they are. Every single illegal knows what has to be done to get attention, and the the special interest groups as well as others join in to help them, in turn the tax payers have to pay the bill. The people in our state and government offices need to stop this party right now.

The church should take care of the priest that are taking indecent liberty and abuse to our children instead of worrying about the law breakers invading our country. I beleive that all churches are sponging off of us tax payers and for them to think about giving sanctury to law breakers. They want us to donate to them so they could take care of the law breakers and put more Americans out of work. They should do something about the molesters first. The churches are all about money especially those T.V. evangelist. Vote for Biden/Dood ticket.

If any church get involve with people that have violated the law, then the government have the right to interfere with the church. If the churches want to keep their separation of government and church then they should respect the written law of our government.

Are the churches willing to pay all the expenses of these illegal aliens? They should lose their tax-exempt status, and be required to contribute if they want to interfere with state matters.

As far as "the government" separating families, nobody is forcing the law-breakers to leave their children behind. They choose to do this.

know-your-rights training? They dont pay taxes, therefore they have no rights. Those are reserved for citizens, not another country's trash.

Those church's funding should be pulled, or they should get fined along w/ business' that hire them.

If they harbor illegals, they should lose any tax exempt status they had and be put on trial for breaking laws in America. Our laws pertain to all organizations in the USA, even the churches. Who would tithe to someone who is breaking our laws? It's ridiculous. If they want to help these people go to south of the border and do it, not here.
