For the best, widest, biggest beaches, great scenery, wonderful entertainments and great food I would thoroughly recommend the North Norfolk area. It is a great place to visit with beautiful windmills, wide open beaches, coastal walks, world class birdwatching and tremendous wildlife, superb museums, glass blowing factories etc.
The area is famous for attractive villages, great woodland walks, fields of lavender, fantastic stately homes (including the Royal Sandringham estate), open heathland and one of the oldest national parks (the Norfolk Broads) in the UK.
Whatever your interest, they can be catered for in North Norfolk - Sailing, fishing, birdwatching, walking, sketching and painting or a cookery masterclass.
If you want to go there and see for yourself try http://www.thegreatescapeholiday.com
They can provide a beautiful self-catering cottage, stock it with local produce and even supply a chef to turn the produce into into high class cuisine. Just about anything that you could want. Or even leave you alone to have a great time.

Cheers Bigpathome.

The area known as the Marches - the border country with Wales covering the counties of Herefordshire and Shropshire. Base yourself in Ludlow one of the most beautiful towns in England and explore the exquisitely beautiful rural landscape including the Long Mynd and Stipperstones near Church Stretton, the Mortimer Forest near Ludlow. You can travel by tain to Ludlow from London Euston changing at Crewe in about 3 hours. There are also regular train services to Ludlow from Cardiff, Manchester and Shrewsbury.

I live in North East Cornwall, and although I too love the Lake District, I find it crowded, and congested all year round. I have just returned from visiting my youngest Daughter who lives in Ambleside, and it took up to 20 minutes each day to get into the small town, and that was in November!!. I was glad to get back to my quaint quiet village. I don't know how to put links onto my answer, but type in

you will get pictures of the most amazing coastal views, and local places, and it is also close to the "Eden Project", and not as overly "touristy" as many of the more well known places in Cornwall.

Lots of places!

The Lake district is great for walking - as is the Peak District - more hilly there though.
Cornwall is good especially for the beaches & surfing.
The Norfolk broads can't be beaten for boating type holidays.

Rather depends what your interests are. I always tend to look for places with interesting history ang archaeology - York is great for that!

Channel islands as it's near Paris and it'd be cheaper to make a run to the continent.
