I am trained classically as a pianist and singer. I sing arias, etc. but I have trouble singing pop....

Is this normal for classical singers?

Yes...you're trained to sustain notes... Pop is usually "spoken" word...with only a bit of melodic inflection.

I'm a classically trained singer who has performed at some places with big names in many styles of music. I find that opera can get you into the habit of using too much vibrato. It is great for your vocal technique though so don't forget about it. Try to sing in a pure voice removing all traces of vibrato. This might take a while, but it will be well worth it. Also, keeping your notes forward will help. Remember, every technique you learn in opera should apply to your pop singing. If you pretend you're singing opera, just more forward and without vibrato, you'll stop having the vocal tension you're probably feeling. Also, try singing on the ground on your back. It forces you to use the right muscles, no matter what style of music you're singing.

I am not classically trained, but have a Broadway-type voice. I also find it challenging to sing pop. The pop songs where I sound the best are the ones where I: sing more in chest than in head voice; concentrate on straight tone and limit vibrato; and "muddy" my enunciation a bit.

I feel for you...I enjoy singing with friends, karaoke, etc., but don't really feel I sound my best (as I do when singing show tunes or standards).

Be precise on your ordinary proficiency. I am similar to you. Our voice style will get jobs...amusing, distinctive jobs! What well is being in a position to sing pop until you're so first-rate you turn out to be on American Idol or like Katy Perry that is a one million in 1 possibility. If you drive your voice to do anything it does not wish to, you'll screw it up. I've gotten to paintings in professional theatre and opera and this is a blast! And getting paid to have such a lot amusing (despite the fact that it may be difficult paintings, it is nonetheless such a lot amusing!)? Pop track, blah. You are so fortunate to have a proficiency that you'll be able to use past a karoake get together! Love it and handle it!
