People of that day lived in a very traditional, almost rigid society of small villages. Where you were expected to follow in your father's occupation, etc. This carpenter's son was not well regarded when He took the roll of prophet and more. They asked, who does He think He is? He thinks He is better than us, trying to make Himself important.. They lived in a cast system. He was not generally accepted.
