For the most part bulldogs have had their aggressiveness bred out of them. I was a driver for FedEx in Georgia in a city near UGA, whose mascot is a bulldog. So I got to meet a lot of them and they are, as a whole, very sweet dogs.

Dogs are born with all their instincts. They don't just 'get' them at a certain age. Chances are it's there and you've just never seen it because you've never been in a situation where he had to protect you.

Edit to the person below me: Aggressiveness is NOT the same thing as protectiveness and confusing the two is a huge mistake.

I agree with the fact that his abilities are there but your lucky enough not to have been in a situation where he needed to act. Sounds like you might have a pretty sound minded dog if he doesn't "act" aggressive or over protective for no apparent reason. They know danger before we do. Why would you want him to be that way if he doesn't need to?

If he doesn't have it now, he may not have it at all. Just like some border collies don't herd and some golden retrievers don't retrieve.
