He wants your VIN so he can do a CARFAX report on it. It isn't like he so going to be able to steal your car via a VIN number.
Pretty much, if you don't give him the VIN, he can't trust you and he won't buy the car. It is pretty standard anymore when you are selling a car via the internet to include VIN
BTW....how much you asking, I am looking for a late 90s Manual Civic

I believe that it would be OK. After all since this is an Internet transaction he has to have the car's history checked out and the only way he can do this is with the VIN number. People are wary of buying used cars that might have suffered storm damaged and then rebuilt hastily for resale. Using the VIN number to find out the car's history is about the only way people have as a defense against getting stung. You may not be able to sell the car over the Internet without giving out the number. I can't think of any use it could be to anyone unscrupulous.

Giving him the VIN allows him to run a Carfax report on your car. If there's nothing on the report that would dissuade him from buying the car (e.g. serious accident, salvage title, stolen, etc), giving him the VIN will help you sell it. If you have anything to hide, I can pretty much guarantee he won't buy the car whether you give him the VIN or not.
If you're uncomfortable about giving out the VIN, you can print up the Carfax report yourself and give it to prospective buyers. This will definitely get you on their good side, because not only does it show them you have nothing to hide, but it saves them money as well.

It wont hurt to give someone the VIN number, they will use that number to see if the car has been involved in accidents, how many times it was sold and such. Someone is more likely to purchase the car if they have the history of the car!
Think about it..anyone walking past your car can get your VIN number.
GOOD LUCK!

I check the plate and vin no# with DMV to see if it has any tickets, fines, penalties, ect.. before I buy any car, especially off the street, then I go ask the seller these things to see if he Lie's, this will tell me not to buy that car because he's hiding all other info, this prevents you from buying it then having the government lock it on the spot or towing it away, and you don't want to be surprised with fines or fees before registering it, or you can't register it, not to mention many other good reasons,(buyer beware).

Sure. I work at a bank and people call all the time with VIN numbers so they can get an accurate idea of the value of the vehicle. I don't think there is any way he can commit fraud or anything with a VIN.
