You think, then you have prayed. Your thoughts are prayers. So you are always praying. Listen to what you're saying.
There is no wrong or right position to be in. But a prayer of claiming with gratitude is more powerful many times than a begging prayer. However, one word prayers have been some of the most powerful prayers in history. Help! being the common one word prayer most used. Just practice, that is, keep on doing it. Don't worry about form or content. Just be sure your intention is to communicate with God, and you'll do fine. Your prayer ability will continue to grow and strengthen as you use it. God isn't picky, since God already knows what you are going to say before you do. So just go ahead and acknowledge that you are doing 'something' with God. Bless you for your efforts and the question. Hope this helps.

Prayer is talking with God. He desires a relationship with you. Let Him know that you are sorry for your sins, or things you've done wrong or didn't do right. Also invite Him to live within you and guide your life. Believe that Jesus is God's Son who took your punishment by his death on the cross. Know that Jesus was raised from death and lives. Thank Him. Then, find a church that teaches the Bible.

Don't listen to the non believers, every time you talk to God you pray, I think of God many times during the day and it may be at the wierdest times but I try to always acknowledge His greatness first and just talk to him.

I learned catholic prayers as a child but I have studied and learned this:

Imagine you are God which prayer would you listen to the most, a heartfelt heart to heart or a recited poem that many recite without giving thought to the words anymore because they just repeat them like a chant almost. I think our Lord Jesus Christ taught us the manner in which we are to approach our Father when praying, and we are to follow this formula so to speak, and because of His great sacrifice all things must be asked in the name of Jesus, this I do believe because taught us this, it is in all the books that depict his life, the repetative story with difference in perspectives sometimes from the writer proves to me the authenticity of those scriptures, and I believe in what Jesus stood for, not fearing ridicule for believing and teaching what he knew was right and He was chosen to do.

Just talk to Jesus and don't forget to just thank God when your prayers are answered. Peace be with you.

So in what way exactly are you a protestant? Because your parents are, and they told you that YOU are? Instead of being Protestant because someone told you that you were, consider reading, experiencing some life and then making your OWN mid up about what you are and what you believe. In the meantime, please don't waste precious time praying to a supernatural being who's nature you're not sure even sure of, assuming he/she/it has a nature.

Prayer is another form of meditation in which we go within ourselves to find out the answers to life .Its all about an ever growing self realization and awareness as to who we really are as souls.

Why? How can you say you are protestant? Shouldn't you figure out if that's really what you believe first?

Be respectful, open, and sincere. Ask for what you need specifically and be thankful for what you already have. Most important pray that God shows you how to accomplish His will, in your life.

Matthew 6 - Prayer (NIV)
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9"This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

The way I see it,
you just have to seek the Lord whole-heartedly and talk with Him like you would talk to anyone else. The key is... that you have a relationship with Him always.
-God Bless.
